Collaboration
The new "Virtual Classroom" facility is called Collaboration and was designed specifically for use in Blackboard.
There are two options that can be used. These are:
- Lightweight Chat which supports text messaging (chat) only and,
- a much more sophisticated "Virtual Classroom" option which has a range of synchronous tools.
These tools include:
- text-based messaging (Chat) window,
- Whiteboard for drawing which also doubles as the display area for websites and Powerpoint presentations,
- Group Browser to collaboratively view and browse websites,
- Question and Answer area.
This facility is functionally similar to the previous third party product but much easier to use.
AdviceJava Runtime Plugin
You need to make sure that your PC has the correct Java Runtime Environment (JRE) plugin installed to enable you to use the Virtual Classroom option of the Collaboration tool. If you do not have the correct JRE plugin you will be prompted to download the approriate version the first time you start the Virtual Classroom.
The instructions for the install are simple enough to follow but be aware that at one point you may be advised that "the JRE you are about to install is only for computers that use US English" and you will be advised "to seek an 'international' version of the JRE". IGNORE this comment and continue to install the plugin. Installing the Blackboard linked JRE plugin will not affect any of the local PC settings.
On completion of the install, you should be able to open the Virtual Classroom.
Popup Blocker
If you have a "Popup Blocker" enabled on your PC you may find that the Virtual Classroom option may not open when you select the "Join" button. If this is the case hold down the "Ctrl" key at the same time as you click on the Virtual Classroom "Join" button. This will overide the "blocker" and the Virtual Classroom will open.
