BLACKBOARD FAQS - INTRODUCTION

Blackboard is an online learning support system. Blackboard is used by teaching staff at the University of Paisley to provide online support for students. The system is deployed across a wide range of programmes that includes full time and part programmes as well as those programmes designed to suit flexible and distance learning study modes.

The system provides the opportunity for you to:
  • access course information and course learning materials,

  • communicate with fellow students and lecturers using email, discussion boards and chat,

  • submit assignments online,

  • receive online feedback from lecturers,

  • keep up to date with course developments as they happen.
Blackboard, like many other learning support systems, provides you with a 'point and click' system navigation interface that makes it easy to locate and retrieve learning resources/materials stored on the system as well as use other system facilities, eg email.

System navigation in Blackboard is facilitated by a hierarchy of named buttons, eg Communication, Staff Information, Course Documents, each button being the top level access point to the learning resources/materials associated with each button. When a button is selected, you will be present with a series of sub-options from which you can make further selections.

The learning resources/materials created by a lecturer can take a number of forms, eg text, powerpoint and spreadsheet files and/or links to other web sites. They can be stored directly on the Blackboard server or on any another, for example, departmental server. Access to the learning resources/materials, eg for viewing and/or downloading to your local system, is gained by selecting the relevant named buttons/sub-options and associated hyperlinks.

In addition to gaining access to module learning resources/materials you also have a number of system options that facilitate communication with your lecturer(s) and fellow students. Communication can take the form of email, discussion boards, chat (for online tutorials) and file exchange.

These facilities, in combination with "anytime-anywhere" access to learning materials, should help you to expand your learning opportunities and improve your access to learning support.

The lists of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) is designed to help you get to know the system and how you can use it to best effect.
